Tanzananite

Named in honour of its country of origin, this December birthstone is primarily sourced in the Merelani Hills in Tanzania. Often described as “velvety”, because of its deep and saturated colour, which ranges from a pure rich blue to violet. That famous Jewellery brand with the trademark blue believed that tanzanite had international appeal and became its main distributor. With its vivid colours, high clarity and potential for large cut stones, tanzanite quickly became a sensation. Today, it is not only a December birthstone, but it is also the gem for the 24th wedding anniversary. Read on to discover more and get your free download - a gorgeous Tanzanite Facebook cover photo!

I'm often asked how I get so much detail in these, and the answer is - every tiny facet is hand drawn and each colour chosen individually, to represent the cascade of light and colour present in a glittering polished gem stone. It’s a very time consuming process but I think the results are so worth it!

Tanzanite was one of the most exciting gem discoveries of the 20th century. Blue stones emerging from Tanzania were first misidentified as zoisite. In 1967 prospectors located the primary source for this stone, the Merelani Hills. It was named tanzanite in honor of its country of origin. Often described as velvety because of its deep and saturated colour, it can range from a pure rich blue to violet. Tiffany & Co. believed that tanzanite had international appeal and became its main distributor, and in 1968, launched a major advertising campaign to promote it. With its vivid colors, high clarity and potential for large cut stones, tanzanite quickly became a sensation.
