Hand drawn by Emma. Peonies are certainly beautiful enough to tempt the gods. They earned their name from Greek mythology. The stories vary, but in my favourite, a nymph named Paeonia, caught the eye of Apollo, so a jealous Aphrodite turned the nymph into a flower. In China and Japan, peonies mean ‘king of flowers’. And are used in big, important holidays like Chinese New Year and other important traditions. They are also known to symbolise wealth. This is because for a really long time they were available only to only royalty. In Japan, they are used as a symbol of bravery, honour and good fortune.
