Alexandrite
Alexandrite is the rare variety of the mineral chrysoberyl that changes color in different lighting. First discovered in 1830 in Russia’s Ural Mountains, the gem was named after the young Alexander II, heir to the throne. When certain types of long, thin inclusions are parallel to each other in this June birthstone, they can create another phenomenon, called chatoyancy or the cat’s-eye effect. Few gems are as fascinating – or as stunning – as cat’s-eye alexandrite. Read on to discover more and get your free download - a gorgeous Alexandrite Facebook cover photo! Emma x
I'm often asked how I get so much detail in these, and the answer is - every tiny facet is hand drawn and each colour chosen individually, to represent the cascade of light and colour present in a glittering polished gem stone. It’s a very time consuming process but I think the results are so worth it!

Alexandrite is the modern birthstone for June and the Anniversary stone for the 55th year of marriage. It is also considered the stone of “Friday’s Child.” It is extremely rare, and fairly modern, only discovered in the 19th Century. The name Alexandrite comes from the fact that the gemstone was first discovered in the emerald mines near the Tokovaya River in Russia’s Ural Mountains in 1830, on the day of Prince Alexander II of Russia’s birthday.
